SUMMARY:Treating the Individual with Ataxia - NDT Workshop in the Management of Adults with Stroke and Brain Injury - December 5\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description: This one-day workshop provides an opportunity for health care professionals to gain insight into treating the individual with ataxia. Treating the individual with ataxia can often be a very challenging experience for the clinician. Perhaps this is because we have focused on addressing the clinical symptoms rather than the underlying impairments. This workshop will explore primary impairments present in the individual with ataxia\, current theoretical evidence and treatment strategies using a NDT approach. The overall objective of this workshop is to provide clinicians with knowledge and skills they can use in treating the individual with ataxia to promote positive functional outcomes. Course Learning Objectives:\n Upon completion of the course the participants will: \n\n\nGain knowledge of the current literature and how we use this information within the NDT Practice Model in treating the individual with ataxia\nIdentify major impairments interfering with typical movement and function in the individual with ataxia.\nDemonstrate handling skills to address impairments in the individual with ataxia and work within functional activities including activities in sitting\, standing and gait.\nDemonstrate an increased repertoire of evaluation and treatment strategies for the individual with ataxia.\n\n\nInstructor: Karen Guha\, PT\, CIDN\, C/NDT\, NDTA™ Coordinator Instructor\n Karen is a physiotherapist at Grand River Hospital and Back Works Spinal and Sports Rehabilitation.  She received her Physical Therapy degree from the University of Toronto in 1996 and became NDT trained in 1999. SUMMARY:Teaming Up - Supporting Upper Extremity Recovery While Addressing Cognition Following Stroke or Brain Injury Using an NDT Approach - October 7\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description: Often after a stroke or brain injury\, there can be cognitive and perceptual difficulties in addition to physical impairments that impact a client’s independence in everyday tasks. As Occupational Therapists it can be challenging to figure out how to best manage our time so that we are incorporating the more involved upper extremity (UE) into tasks while also addressing a client’s cognitive and perceptual impairments. This one day workshop will present NDT principles related to the incorporating the more involved or hemiplegic UE into cognitive and perceptual tasks through using the UE in an active support role.  The course will provide a holistic opportunity to explore practical tips to engage the UE in active support while being creative of how to work on cognition and perception while considering the environment\, client’s goals and impairments.  Course format will include a lecture\, with a large focus on handling and problem solving labs. These labs will work on facilitating the UE in active support as well as ideas of how to address cognitive/perceptual impairments. Course Learning Objectives:\n Upon completion of the course the participants will: \n\n\nLearn about the benefits of using the UE as an active support during functional tasks for clients who have neurological impairments and particularly as applied to the management of the hemiplegic UE\nExplore research on cognition\, cognitive treatment strategies and how cognition and exercise can impact one another\nDevelop basic assessment problem solving and handling skills to improve trunk and upper extremity alignment to promote active support during cognitive and perceptual tasks\nProblem solve strategies of how to set up the client’s environment to address client’s trunk and UE impairments using the arm in active support while also working on cognition and perception\nCollaboratively explore and analyze a variety of cognitive and perceptual tasks and problem solve how to grade the complexity of these tasks to best address client’s goals and impairments\n\n\nInstructor: Sherry Rock\n Sherry Rock OT Reg.(Ont) is an Occupational Therapist who has worked at an outpatient NeuroRehabilitation Clinic in Kitchener Ontario for over 21 years. She is the first Adult NDTA™ OT instructor in Canada. SUMMARY:Managing the "Pusher" - NDT Workshop in the Management of Adults with Stroke and Brain Injury - September 5\, 2024
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description: This one-day workshop provides an opportunity for health care professionals to gain insight into managing the individual with contraversive pushing tendencies (“pusher syndrome”).  The individual who suffers from a stroke and has “pushing” tendencies presents with unique impairments that challenges health care professionals.  Patients that “push” have potential to make gains like our other non-pushing patients.  We struggle in treatment because “pushers” not only have impairments like our non-pushing stroke patients\, but they also don’t use their “strong” side in a typical way. It is critical that we treat “pushers” as a team\, often requiring a second therapist/therapy assistant to progress them in therapy. We will explore how to facilitate the affected/weak side as well as how the second person can inhibit the pushing tendencies. This workshop will present current theoretical evidence and practical NDT skills for participants to use when working with the individual who “pushes”.  The overall objective of this course is to enable participants to bring information back to their facility and apply it toward promoting more functional movement and achieving functional outcomes with their patients. Course Learning Objectives:\n Upon completion of the course the participants will: \n\n\nUnderstand current literature and apply this within the NDTA™ Contemporary Practice Model to treat the individual with neurological impairments\nExplore treatment strategies (including using a second person to inhibit the “pushing”) to address impairments within functional activities including activities in sitting\, standing and early gait.\nDemonstrate basic handling skills to enhance patient’s functional movement as related to his/her functional goals including activities in sitting\, standing and gait.\nDemonstrate an increased repertoire of evaluation and treatment strategies for the individual with stroke who have “pushing” tendencies.\n\n\nInstructor: Karen Guha\, PT\, CIDN\, C/NDT\, NDTA™ Coordinator Instructor\n Karen is a physiotherapist at Grand River Hospital and Back Works Spinal and Sports Rehabilitation.  She received her Physical Therapy degree from the University of Toronto in 1996 and became NDT trained in 1999. Karen became a NDTA™ PT Instructor in 2007 and a NDTA™ Coordinator Instructor in 2011.  In 2017 Karen completed her certification in Integrated Dry Needling.  Karen has over 25 years’ experience working with adults with neurological impairments in acute\, rehabilitation and outpatient settings.  Karen has taught NDT courses throughout North America and internationally. SUMMARY:Chedoke-McMaster Stroke Assessment Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Chedoke-McMaster Stroke Assessment (CMSA) is a reliable and valid measure used to assess physical impairment and disability in clients with stroke and other neurological impairment.  Canadian Best Practice Recommendations  identify the CMSA as an important tool for Stroke Rehabilitation Assessment. This one-day workshop\, funded by the Central South Stroke Network\, has been designed to provide participants (physiotherapists\, occupational therapists\, and other health professionals) with the opportunity to learn to use the measure as a clinical or research assessment tool. During the one-day workshop\, the instructors use video and PowerPoint presentations and group discussion to educate the participants about the administrative and scoring guidelines of the Chedoke Assessment. Lectures include information about the measure’s development and psychometric properties\, and clinical application.  At the end of the workshop\, the scoring competency of the participants is tested.  All participants will receive written feedback via email regarding their performance on the test. All who attend will receive a certificate of participation\, and those who wish to know if they met the requirements for scoring competency will receive that information. These letters will be distributed within three weeks after the workshop. Maria Huijbregts\, PT\, PhD\, and/or Pat Miller\, PhD will be the instructors. Please indicate your interest in this course by emailing Tina Vallentin\, Regional Stroke Education and Data Coordinator\, at vallent@hhsc.ca by September 29\, 2023. **Please note that this workshop will take place at St. Peter’s Hospital\, in Hamilton\, Ontario and is only open to stroke care providers in the Central South Region.  In your response\, include the following information: \nWork Email\nProfession\nPlace of work  \nRole in the stroke continuum (i.e.\, acute\, inpatient rehab\, community\, etc.)\nParticipants will be notified by October 3rd. SUMMARY:NDT - Challenges in Gait - June 8\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Workshop Description: In order for individuals’ post-stroke or brain injury to be truly independent when walking\, they need to be challenged beyond forward walking. Functional gait includes being able to walk at different speeds\, on different surfaces\, changing directions\, combining gait with other activities and negotiating stairs. Often this is difficult for many individuals who have suffered a neurological injury.  This one-day workshop will present NDT principles related to preparation for and treating in function during standing and walking. This workshop will focus on strategies to facilitate the trunk\, UE and LE with the goal of challenging individuals’ post-stroke or brain injury in standing\, during gait\, and while performing various functional activities. These functional activities include forward and backward walking\, turning\, and stair climbing. The workshop will provide an opportunity for analysis of biomechanics and the assessment of movement dysfunction in an individual post-stroke or brain injury during these functional activities.\n Workshop Objectives:\n Upon completion of this workshop the participants will be able to:\n1. Identify components of typical gait\n2. Demonstrate basic skill in analyzing atypical components of trunk\, upper and lower extremity\nfunction\, frequently associated with conditions of neurological dysfunction\, during activities in\nstanding\, during gait and on the stairs.\n3. Demonstrate basic handling skills to enhance patient’s movement as related to his/her\nfunctional goals during standing\, gait and on the stairs. Instructor: Karen Guha\, PT\, CIDN\, C/NDT\, NDTA™ Coordinator Instructor\n Karen is a physiotherapist at Grand River Hospital and Back Works Spinal & Sports Rehabilitation. She received her Physical Therapy degree from the University of Toronto in 1996 and became NDT trained in 1999. Karen became a NDTA™ PT Instructor in 2007\, a NDTA™ Coordinator Instructor in 2011\, and a NDTA™ Advanced Course Instructor in 2014. She has over 25 years’ experience working with adults with neurological impairments in acute\, rehabilitation and outpatient settings. Karen has taught NDT courses throughout North America and internationally.  Format: Workshop format will include a short lecture and then practical hands-on lab sessions for the remainder of the day. During lab sessions\, participants will have the opportunity to analyze\ntypical movement and practice handling skills on their fellow participants. Participants will have the opportunity to problem solve how these handling skills will be modified and progressed to promote functional improvements in standing and during gait activities.\n Workshop Agenda:  8:00 – 8:15 Introduction\n8:15 – 9:15 Lecture: Typical gait\n9:15 -10:00 Lab: Facilitating gait\n10:00 -10:15 Break\n10:15 -11:00 Lab: Bombarding mid stance\n11:00 – 11:45 Lab: Analysis and facilitation of stair climbing\, descend backwards\n11:45 -12:30 Lab: Analysis and facilitation of backward stepping\n12:30 -1:00 Lunch\n1:00 -1:45 Lab: Facilitation of stair climbing\, descending forward\n1:45 -2:30 Lab: Analysis and facilitation of turning\n2:30-3:00 Lab: Strategies for swing Requirements: Participants must be a registered Physical Therapist\, Occupational Therapist\, Therapy Assistant or Registered Kinesiologist who work with individuals who have suffered from stroke\, brain injury or other neuromotor disorders. Participants must provide stroke care within the Central South Region of Ontario. REGISTER NOW
